"When you want to go, you go"

This was the response of Real Zaragoza's captain, Luis Carlos Cuartero, to Samuel Eto'o's attempts to leave the pitch after being subjected to racists taunts by Zaragoza fans on Saturday.

El País reports that

As soccer players from around the world asked for concerted action against abuse directed at black players by racist spectators, Real Zaragoza captain Luis Carlos Cuartero criticized on Wednesday the decision to fine his club after Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o was jeered last weekend. Soccer’s disciplinary committee announced late on Tuesday evening that it would be fining Real Zaragoza €9,000 for last Saturday’s incidents, which led to Eto’o threatening to leave the field of play in the La Romareda stadium after having so-called “monkey chants” directed at him. “Over the top,” was Cuartero’s view of the fine.

As other reporters have noted, Saturday's events are hardly a rare occurance in Zaragoza. While such vicious and open racism does occur at many grounds accross Spain, Zaragoza is renowned as one of the worst. Last year, club supporters threw bananas at Eto'o.

Nick wrote to the Observer Sports Monthly last year to comment on what he felt was an imbalanced view of Spanish racism in the British press. I disagree with him on this issue because I do believe that there is much more open, institutional and socially acceptable racism here. Don't get me wrong: it's nowhere near as bad as Australia (my cousin has had 'Paki' shouted at her from passing cars on some of the smartest streets in Canberra), but racism is a bigger problem in Spain than it is in the UK.

Eto'o himself has recommended much tougher penalties (closing the Zaragoza stadium for a year), which some will claim are way over the top. But until people learn that if you shout racist abuse at people, you will be severely punished for it, then it will carry on.

Real Zaragoza, their management, players and now captain clearly don't care. As far as they're concerned, Eto'o should take it like a man or leave. I say close the stadium. Keep them out of Europe for two years (not sure if that will really affect them much), ban their fans from games and force them to play behind closed doors, with no revenue, until they can control the racist scum who support them (many reports stated that much of the stadium took part in the chanting). And if la Liga isn't willing to enforce the rules, then they should be fined. 'A little bit of racism' is never acceptable, and some thugs clearly need this hammered into them.

I disagree with you, therefore you're a fascist (and a troll)

It's the accusation that signals desperation and abandonment of reason. "Like Hitler", "Like the Nazis" or simply "Fascist" must be the most overused (and misused)insult around during political discussions. In Spanish politics, the term is used daily on both sides of the left-right divide, and rarely with any true sense.

While it can be amusing when used in exasperation - see the semi-eponymous hero of The Big Lebowski calling the chief of police in Malibu "a fucking fascist" - misusing the term exposes either an ignorance of or an indifference to what the term really means. In that sense, 'fascism' runs the risk of becoming the same as 'terrorism', a word which I never use because I'm just not convinced that it can ever be accurately explained without it involving all governments.

As I have pointed out before, using a word for convenience rather than accuracy (and especially a word as well known as 'fascist') is indicative of gross stupidity. And to misuse the term 'troll' on a website, well... I've never seen the like.

Spain Herald – constructing insanity

Today's highlight in the Spain Herald comes not from John Aust's spasmodically mental Iberian Notes (which he seems to be paid for), but from Isabel Durán who is, I believe, the team's only female mentalist.

To work for the Spain Herald, you need to pass a series of exhaustative interview phases. First of all, you have to be a right winger... obviously, you couldn't be a homosexual (I mean socialist) and write for such a tough, no nonsense publication. Next, you have to spontaneously vomit on seeing an image of Josep-Lluís Carod Rovira. It doesn't matter if it's a picture of him in his swimming trunks: you must vomit immedaitely and then sream and scratch the picture until it's gone. Only then can you try the third stage. This is the one where you're shown a black card, and have to say it's white. But you really have to believe it too.

So a peaceful pro-nationalist demonstration in Barcelona is all part of ETA's campaign? God, I feel so stupid! If I'd known that I was effectively donating rifles and explosives to ETA by marching for the right to decide in Barcelona, I would never have done it. (Actually, I would... it's an open secret among those of us who live in Catalonia that when ETA set a bomb, or kill a policeman, or extort money, or make their silly addresses, we all have a big party in Plaça Sant Jaume, and no Spanish people are allowed to come, in fact we taunt them about it).

So Isabel's got a bee in her bonnet about ETA, about Catalans and about March 11th. Whoa! Hold on! That March 11th?! That famous ETA attack, remember? Isabel remembers Angel Acebes' words from the 11th and 12th of March very well. He did insist that it looked like ETA were responsible. But Isabel!! It came out afterwards that he was lying! Yes that's right, sweet and sexy Angel lied to the entire country. And to the Basque country and to Catalonia too (because, perversely, their citizens were allowed to vote in the Spanish election!).

Finally, I just have to draw attention to a couple of claims about the PP (whoops I mean AVT) demo in Madrid over the weekend. there were not a million and a half people there. You'd be lucky if there fifty thousand. Seriously, Isabel: LAY OFF THE CRACK. OR GET PROFESSIONAL HELP.

Record month

thebadrash.com had over two thousand unique visitors in February, which sets a new record for traffic. As a result, my traffic rankings are much improved, though there's much to do!

February was record breaking despite the fact that it's the shortest month, and that there was a two day break in statistics, meaning that the figures could have been even higher.

Along with over three hundred regular visitors, we also launched tomandgemma.com, which covers our wedding plans, and experienced growth in headphobe.com's traffic. I've also performed several site upgrades and added the 'related posts' which you can see at the bottom of each article.

Edit (8 March 2006)
Yeah, the related posts thing has been removed because it was utter bollocks and never worked.
Those with less successful blogs based in Spain should take note: the hit number for February was 42,685. I try to count only 'proper' visitors in my stats. Maybe you could do the same?
