A bad news day

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to visit the 3GSM conference by the Plaça de Espanya. As per last year, it was full of people talking on Bluetooth headsets ("forty thousand or I'll take it to Sky"), PR chicks handing out leaflets and... that's about it. I was disappointed not to find any of the companies I needed to speak to but that's work stuff.

The really bad news today is that barcelonareporter.com is now up for sale. Under John Pawlenko, it became a vital part of my web-based day and I'm really sad to see it go. I hope that if someone does buy it, they'll try to carry on the good work that made BR so great.

  1. Hi Tom,

I am not sure I share your views regarding BR.
To me it was like reading Libertad Digital or a Ciudadanos leaflet but in English. It was painful to see so many foreign nationals adopting the attitudes and views of the Spanish nationalists. Maybe John P. tried to make it an objective and non-partisan web site (I have my doubts though…) but the main contributors and posters were clearly anti-Catalan and pro-Spanish. All the news and comments were biased towards the "Ciudadanos view” of the issue, and there was a constant, underhand, subtle belittling of Catalan language and culture. I tried to look for news with a positive spin on Catalan language, culture, nationhood, whatever, but I could not find anything material to counter the endless anti-Catalan articles and comments posted on the site.

May I dare to suggest that given your IT skills and interest on politics and media. …. ;-)

  2. Hi Rab,

I do think that BR made an effort to avoid partiality on the topic of Catalan nationalism. I also at times felt that Ciudadanos were given too much attention but I think it's important to note that this was more a reflection of the treatment they were given by the media at large. Several of my own blog posts (as well as many by other people) which were at least in favour of further autonomy for Catalonia.

Comments on the site were often 'anti-Catalanista'. This was not, however, the result of editorial policy as much as the efforts of a small number of posters keen on extolling their opinions.

As to feeling like Libertad Digital, I think that's unfair. For a while, Spain Herald's articles were given way too much attention. I reckon this was to do with easy controversy and content as opposed to an intended slant towards the mental right wing. If anything, BR felt more like a mixture of La Vanguardia and El País: not pro-Catalan by any means, but not anti-Catalan either.

Finally, I am interested in nurturing debate about these issues and have already tried to launch a forum (talkBCN) for exactly that. However, I already spend too much time in front of a computer to make a real go of it. I'm investigating other possibilities and will take things as they come.
