Trouble brewing in Venezuela

Of course, it might be counter-propaganda, but it looks like the forthcoming referendum in Venezuela could result in serious instability, instigated by foreign anti-Chavez powers.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time, would it?

I fear the worst in Venezuela. The rumour is that the Spanish banks BBVA and Santander are planning their exit from the market but there are no buyers. With the credit squeeze set to last into next year and Chavez being quite unpredictable, nobody wants to enter the market.

This is possibly what Chavez wants: renationalise banking in Venezuela and send a message to Spanish companies. It would be something unprecedented and it would send the whole of Latin America into a spin. Will Bolivia follow?

Bolivia is becoming quite unstable as well, there were riots in the countryside last week and apparently there is increased tension between the judiciary elite and the government.

If this was the 80s, the US would be there playing old tricks (Pinochet, contras, etc) but one would think they have their hands full with Irak.

The question is: are the forces behind the political tension in these two nations all internal? We will find out sooner or later. Interesting times ahead.

Interesting couple of articles you link to there. I wonder now that he's lost, if any of these murky forces are a bit lost now. They were probably banking on a victory so they could unleash hell.
