More trouble in Pakistan

I've just heard that Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated at a rally in Pakistan. This is obviously sad news for a country that stands on the brink of either democracy or disaster. While it's unlikely to be revealed one way or another, I've heard that President Musharaff and the military intelligence service of Pakistan are often accused of being behind terrorist attacks and assassinations. Is it really possible that the state would do something like this? I hope not, for everyone's sake.

In the end Musharaff wants to retain control of the country rather than plunge it into more chaos so I doubt that his people are behind this. With or without Bhutto the future for Pakistan is not very bright. A comment I saw somewhere else yesterday said that the country is run by generals or thieves - you could add to that the option of a combination of the two. She had the chance to do things for her country and instead she treated it as her private property - family and friends did very nicely from her terms of office. The fact that Bhutto was probably the best of the options available says it all about the quality of the political class in the country.

Greame, I couldn't agree more. I am sad she was assassinated, indeed it was a said day for the democracy. But let's not make her a hero or a martyr now. Half of the country's economy is run by her husband. She was just a smart bitch who was covering her tracks. Apparently not that good.

I agree with you both. I think the way her 19 year-old Oxford (or is it Cambridge?) undergraduate son has been installed as her successor smacks of just yet another political dynasty hanging onto power at any cost. There's no way a 19 year old student is ready or prepared for that kind of responsibility. It's a sad state of affairs in Pakistan.

Yeah, she was by no means perfect, nor was she the truest defender of the people.

But 'bitch' is a bit much.

I got carried away. I came to hate politicians, it's never about belief in a better way but taking as much as you can as long as you can.
