What a great piece. I read it at work this morning and it brought a tear to me eye.
A few years ago I met one survivor of the International Brigades in a Glasgow pub and it was unforgettable. He carried with him a book of poems by Machado, and could recite them in pretty good Spanish even if he had not been to the country ever since –the betrayal of seeing Spain endure forty years of Fascism because of the Allies’ geopolitics games made him ashamed of the British government.
Nice link to the article on Jack Jones. Reading his words reminds me of the kind of trade unionist that seems to be rare these days: someone who will act out of a sense of goodwill to strangers.
I argue that this same kind of goodwill is needed in the future over changes to Catatonia's public education here in this blog:
